World Bicycle Day - 3 June 2026
World Bicycle Day was proclaimed by the United Nations as an annual celebration of the bicycle as a sustainable, affordable and healthy form of transport. It recognises the positive impact cycling can have on both physical and mental wellbeing, while also helping to reduce environmental impact.
At Colets, cycling plays a bigger role in everyday life than many people might realise.
For some members, the cycling starts before they even step through the doors. Choosing to cycle to Colets instead of driving is not only a great way to build movement into the day, but also helps reduce congestion and lower emissions within the local community. With more and more members arriving on two wheels, perhaps one day the cycle racks might even rival the car park spaces!
Inside the club, the versatility of cycling can be seen across a number of areas. The gym is home to several different styles of exercise bike, designed to suit a range of training goals and fitness levels. Meanwhile, the Spin Studio brings cycling energy to life, with 20 bikes set up in front of a large screen and immersive sound system, creating a motivating atmosphere for riders of all abilities.
Group cycle classes at Colets are designed to challenge and inspire, whether you are building fitness, training for outdoor cycling or simply looking for a fun way to move. The bikes themselves track key metrics including speed, cadence and power output, helping members monitor progress and push their performance further. It is also a fantastic way to keep cycling through the darker winter months, poor weather or busy schedules when outdoor riding is less appealing.
Cycling culture at Colets extends beyond the walls of the club too, through our very own cycling community - VC Colets.
Using Basil’s as a meeting point before and after rides, members head out each Sunday in small groups wearing the club’s distinctive blue and orange kit. Routes often take riders through the Surrey Hills, Windsor and beyond, making the most of the incredible countryside and quiet back lanes right on our doorstep. Distances typically range from 50-100km, with climbs varying throughout the year depending on the season and route.
More than anything, VC Colets is about enjoying the outdoors, building friendships and sharing a passion for cycling together.
So, how could you celebrate World Bicycle Day this year?
You could head out for a ride with friends or family, dust off and service your current bike, explore a new route, watch a major cycling event like the Giro d’Italia, try your first Spin class or even join VC Colets for a Sunday ride.
However you choose to celebrate, cycling is a brilliant reminder that movement can be practical, social, challenging and fun - all at the same time.
