Inside the World of Real Tennis: Training with a Hampton Court Palace Athlete

We’ve gained exclusive insight into one of our members, Jack, whose social media videos have gone viral, captivating audiences fascinated by his unique lifestyle and career.

Living within the grounds of Hampton Court Palace and competing in one of the world’s oldest sports, Jack has become a modern-day link to history.

But behind the viral moments and palace setting lies dedication, discipline, and relentless training, and that is where Colets, alongside personal trainer Stefan, plays a major role in his fitness journey as an athlete.

How did you get into ‘real tennis’?

So, I’d never actually heard of real tennis until I graduated from university. I had a strong background in table tennis and football. One day, I was looking at the Sport England website and came across an advert to become a trainee real tennis professional.

Member Takeaway: You never know where your next opportunity may come from. Stay open-minded, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to try something completely new.

What is the hardest part about being a real tennis player?

Just losing matches, really. I broke onto the pro tour about a year ago, playing with the big boys now, and I’m still in that phase where I'm gaining experience; it's tough. My goal is to break through that period, so hopefully next year I’ll start making the later rounds and pushing forward.

Member Takeaway: Progress often comes with setbacks. Losing, plateaus, and difficult periods are part of growth. Keep showing up and trust the process. The best way to build confidence is through consistency, turning up regularly, and proving to yourself what you’re capable of over time.

What would you say are the top three physical attributes to becoming a real tennis player, and how specific does your training need to be?

I'd say core strength, leg strength, and speed. Training needs to be very specific! As real tennis is such a unique sport, it uses such specific muscle groups. It's hard on your legs and glutes and takes a lot of core strength to use the racquet and hit the ball the right way.

Member Takeaway: Results improve when training matches your goals. Focus on purposeful workouts that support what you want to achieve.

What is the craziest thing about living at Hampton Court?

Even the simplest of things can seem unusual, for example, if I am coming home in the evening, most people would just turn up to their front door, I have to rock up to the front gate, and a security guard comes out and opens it.

Member Takeaway: Even unusual lifestyles still involve normal everyday habits. Balance and routine are key, no matter where you live or work.

What one thing about Real Tennis might we not know?

It was originally called tennis, and it was the original racquet sport. Before lawn tennis came about, it was just tennis. Then lawn tennis became so popular that it became known as tennis, and therefore real tennis had to change its name.

Member Takeaway: Sport evolves, but the opportunity to pick up a racquet and enjoy it is always there, whether that’s squash at Colets or another activity, it’s about getting involved and giving it a go.

What would you say are the differences between tennis and real tennis?

The main difference is that the racquet is a lot heavier, with a smaller sweet spot. The balls are a lot harder and heavier, more like baseballs or cricket balls, so the way we play is very different, and the court itself has walls around with different elements of the court that make it so unique.

Member Takeaway: Small changes in equipment, environment, or training style can have a big impact on performance. In your fitness journey, staying adaptable and being willing to adjust your workouts, technique, or routine can be the key to breaking through plateaus and reaching your goals.

What is a bit of history about the court in Hampton Court Palace?

I think people will be interested to know the court was built in the 1500s by Cardinal Wolsey, and, funny enough, Henry VIII used to absolutely love playing on the exact court I play on in the Palace.

Member Takeaway: Just as sport has evolved over time, Colets has continued to grow and adapt. For members, it’s a reminder to embrace new opportunities, use the facilities around you, and keep progressing with your own fitness journey.

Fitness journeys can come from the most unexpected places. Jack’s story proves that whether you’re training in a historic palace or your local gym, progress is built through consistency, discipline, and showing up with purpose.
