How do you prepare for an intense challenge like a HYROX? Train with us at Colets.
HYROX-Style Training Near Me
We have exciting news for you. Our brand-new outdoor fitness area is here, bringing a fresh way to train and enhancing your outdoor fitness and hybrid-style training experience at Colets, with three new classes giving you even more ways to build strength, cardio, endurance, and functional fitness.
But before you start thinking about the training itself, there’s one question many people might ask:
Do I have to be an athlete to take on something as physically challenging as HYROX?
The running. The sled pushes. The burpees. The carries. The heavy weights. Then doing it all again when you’re already tired.
It looks tough, because it is. But that doesn’t mean you have to be an elite athlete, an experienced runner, or at the peak of your fitness to start training for a challenge like this.
Whether you’re completely new to structured training, getting back into fitness, already training regularly, or preparing for your first HYROX event, the principles are the same: build your fitness progressively, understand what your body needs, and give yourself something to work towards.
Throughout this blog, we’re breaking down the barriers that can make HYROX-style and hybrid training feel out of reach - from thoughts like “I’m not fit enough” and “Why am I so out of breath?” to understanding how strength, cardio, endurance, stamina, and functional fitness all come together when training at Colets.
So, what does HYBRID / HYROX-style training actually challenge?
Part of what makes HYROX & HYBRID training so demanding is that it doesn’t ask your body to do just one thing.
You might be able to run comfortably on its own. You might be able to lift a certain weight in the gym. But what happens when you have to run after using your legs for a strength movement?
You’re combining cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, stamina, power, running ability, and recovery, so the key is to teach your body to keep working whilst already fatigued. And that’s one of the reasons this type of training can be so challenging but so rewarding.
Beginner’s Barrier: How Fit Do You Need to Be to Start HYROX-Style Training?
For beginners, start by getting comfortable with regular training. Speak to our expert gym team, try different classes, and find your fitness routine. This gives you the opportunity to build confidence, and you’ll soon find out what your body can achieve.
Matt’s journey is a good example.
Matt found a new enthusiasm for fitness. He started getting involved in classes more frequently at Colets, working on his strength in the gym, and is looking for ways to challenge himself outside his comfort zone.
“After really locking into my fitness in 2026, I wanted to do something completely outside of my comfort zone and give myself a big target to aim for. Although I chose HYROX specifically because I was ‘peer pressured’ into it by Anais the head of fitness, she promised her full support with the training. So far, she’s delivered on that promise, so I’ll give her that!”
“It has forced me to be a lot more structured and disciplined. Hyrox has a set of exercises I was not familiar with, so I’ve had to adapt my training. This has only been possible with the help and support of the team here, combined with the Hyrox-specific training plan.”
His journey so far highlights something important: sometimes the biggest step isn’t waiting until you feel ready. It’s giving yourself a reason to start.
Already training regularly? Think about the different elements a challenge like this demands and use your training to build on each one. This can help you recognise your strengths and identify the areas where you could improve.
The good news? We’ve just introduced something brand new at Colets designed to help you do exactly that.
First is LES MILLS CEREMONY HYROX.
A high-performance strength and cardio workout where you move through eight exercises across functional workout stations.
The structured format takes the guesswork out of your session, while music sets the energy and pace, instructors keep you moving and the group environment helps keep you motivated.
Then there’s Functional Fitness.
A dynamic, full-body workout designed to improve strength, fitness, and everyday movement. You'll rotate through a variety of strength, cardio, and core stations, with exercises that can be progressed or modified to suit different fitness levels.
Then there’s STRENGTH.
A full-body resistance training class designed to help you get stronger and build confidence with weights. Using a combination of free weights, functional movements, and controlled strength exercises, you’ll work all the major muscle groups with a focus on quality technique and progressive overload.
Our expert Instructors
For Anais and Stefan, this isn’t just something they’ve watched from the sidelines.
Both have successfully completed HYROX themselves and now have the chance to help other people discover this style of training.
Anais, Head of Fitness:
“After completing HYROX myself, I’m really excited to be on the other side of it now and bring that experience into my coaching. I know how much goes into preparing for a challenge like this, so being able to help members take on their own goals or challenges in their own way is something I’m really looking forward to. And yes, I’m definitely excited to put everyone through their paces!”
Stefan, Club Manager:
“What I love about the LES MILLS format is the energy it creates, the music, and the way we’re all trained as instructors that keeps you motivated throughout the session. It makes you want to push yourself, but you’re still part of a supportive group, which I think makes such a difference.”
So you’ve started. You’re training consistently. You’re pushing yourself. But suddenly you’re asking:
Why am I getting so out of breath during training?
Why do my legs feel so heavy during CEREMONY HYROX?
Why is my grip strength giving up during training?
How can I improve my CEREMONY HYROX endurance?
How can I improve my running for HYROX?
How do I get better at HYROX training?
Why am I not improving at HYROX as quickly as I thought I would?
These are common questions when you start challenging your body differently. The important thing is understanding what is holding you back, so you can adapt your training rather than simply trying to work harder.
What can you do when you’re struggling?
This is where your training matters. If you’re struggling with grip strength, there are ways to progressively train your grip and pulling strength. If you’re struggling to maintain your pace, you may need to look at how you’re approaching your cardio and conditioning. If your legs constantly feel exhausted, recovery and training load matter too. And if you’ve been training for weeks but feel like you’re not improving, it may be time to look beyond simply working harder.
One of our members, Duncan, has taken on multiple HYROX races. He says,
“Nobody should expect to complete a Hyrox without preparation; it can take hard work, commitment, and sometimes a little sacrifice. However, the training process is part of the enjoyment and is what makes crossing the finish line so satisfying. As members of Colets, we’re fortunate to have the facilities, classes, and support needed to help us prepare for every exercise and any goal.
Entering a doubles event with a partner or friend can be a fun option. Having someone alongside you to share the experience and push you through the difficult moments during training or on the day can make it feel much more achievable.
I hope more people at Colets decide to take part. Having a group of people to train with, encourage one another, and share the whole journey with would make the experience even more enjoyable.”
As Duncan says, having a group of people to train with, encourage one another and share the whole journey with makes the experience even more enjoyable.
And that’s exactly what we love about Colets. From our expert fitness team and supportive community to our facilities and new outdoor fitness space, there’s always someone to encourage you, something new to try, and another challenge to take on.
This is why we love our club.
